Nollywood film maker, Kunle Afolayan was recently attacked on Instagram for showing support for Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola.

Over the weekend, Afolayan posted a picture of the Governor and wrote ‘A typical example of a true leader and Good Governance. I Kunle Afolayan hereby endorse Ogbeni as a visionary and competent leader. Make your vote count.

About an hour later, one Dada Timilehin commented on the post, calling the film maker a fool. He wrote ‘@kunleafo,you are such a fool,am so sorry for expressing my feelings towards you+mind the state you dey,@aregbesola doesn’t worth it#teamomisore#myb@kunleafolayan’ he wrote. After being bashed by Afolayan’s fans, he later apologised and wrote, ‘So sorry@allyou,this man doesn’t worth it,thats just it’.

Baba Suwe and his Lawyer Bamidele Aturu

Popular Nigerian human rights lawyer Bamidele Aturu has passed away....

Aturu is reported to have died in a Lagos hospital on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, following a brief illness.

He was 49-years-old..

A civil rights lawyer, Aturu was well known for picking up and fighting for human rights causes. He was a founding member of Democratic Alternative, a political group committed to pursuing deep-rooted democratic principles..

Aturu who studied law at the University of Ife, recently turned down his nomination as a member of the on-going national confab, explaining that the conference was designed to achieve nothing....

Aturu was the defence counsel for Yoruba actor Babatunde Omidina (Baba Suwe) back in 2011 when the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested the popular actor for allegedly trafficking cocaine. The actor eventually beat the well-publicized trial, which lasted for close to a year....

May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen!!

Why Do Single Ladies Love Committed and Married Men?

I am sure there must be something about a married man, or a guy who has got a committed relationship for that matter, because ladies seem to prefer these guys to the ones who are single and not committed at all. One would think maybe such women who knowingly court married men are greedy, or maybe it’s the fact that the men are unavailable that make them so appealing, or just that women love to just be in competition over men. Or is it because a man who is already taken is more experienced? Is he seen as able to commit more? Is he more desirable because another woman has pre-screened him? Is it that the food on someone else’s plate always looks tastier? Or maybe if someone else wants him or has him already, he must be worth wanting. But whatever the reason or the answer may be, married men especially seem more attractive for single women to date – in my experience.
Maybe, I need to get into a woman’s head or better still talk to single women who like to date married men and guys who are committed in another relationship. But I find it amusing and confusing at the same time especially when these ladies are still hoping to get married to some single and hardworking guy somewhere out there, but constantly claim that dating a married man is better.
In the past one year, I had reasons to go out sometimes with my colleagues, most of whom are married, and I discovered that most single girls we came across would rather love to be with the married ones amongst us, and the scenario is always odd to me. Or how would one rationalize an available woman that has got a thing for unavailable men, which makes her totally unavailable to a single and available man? But I think most of the time, single women who go for married men either consciously or subconsciously like the idea of being in pseudo relationships—relationships that don’t have any potential of requiring them to make any real commitments to the men in return. But why do they do this? Why would any woman want to pick a guy who’s already been taken, when there are a million single guys around? Well, I tried to think up a few reasons which might be true or not depending on who is looking at the reasons, but hey! I am just a guy.
Now first reason is that some women who go for married guys actually didn’t know the guys were married when they first met them. In cases like this, the women are usually lied to or somehow tricked by these men into thinking that they’re single, when in the real sense, their families are either abroad or living in another city. Any woman in this kind of relationship could be pardoned or overlooked, because it’s not really her fault. But sometimes, even when this woman finds out the man had been lying to her all along, she still continues with the relationship, telling herself she has fallen in love with the man and can’t easily undo her love for him.
Another reason I see is because such women are of questionable ethics and moral standards who don’t want a committed relationship anyway, these women just want a man sometimes, and not all the time. They usually just want a man for some kind of self-gratification, and they date married men for money and other sweet things they can offer, they date married men to take materials things and give sexual pleasure in return, they are in it for convenience.
Some women also go for married guys because they’re women who have such a low opinion of men, they think men are all the same; to these women, there’s no difference between a married man and a single one. So because they don’t really have any positive expectations for any long term relationships with men, and because they no longer entertain any hope of ever having a man all to themselves, they don’t really see any reason not to date a married man or knowingly share him with someone who probably has more of his attention.
Lastly, some single women go for married guys because they are just on power trip; they are predators who hunt for the fun and challenge of it. They know they are explosively attractive and just want to see how far their explosive booty can take them, so they specialize in seducing and dating successful, rich and older married men, and eventually steal them from their wives, either by making them leave the first wife, or simply make them an addition in the long run. I bet there are so many of these women in our society these days, to them, older married men are the ultimate prize; they date them, love them, and possibly marry them. But on the real, for them, it is just a power trip.
So, are you a single woman dating a married guy? Or you simply do not agree with my conclusions above. Let me know through the comment box. Stay Safe.

Nigeria hires U.S. lobby firm for N195 million to launder image over handling of Chibok abduction

President Goodluck Jonathan

The Nigerian government has come under local and international condemnation over its far-from-impressive handling of the Chibok abduction.
In order to whitewash its inept handling of the kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by the terrorist group, Boko Haram, the Goodluck Jonathan administration has awarded a N195 million ($1.2 million) contract to U.S. Public Relations and lobby firm, Levick, to help change “international and local media narrative” surrounding its efforts to rescue the girls, Washington DC based newspaper, The Hill, is reporting.
Boko Haram militants kidnapped the girls, who were writing their final examination, more than 70 days ago from their dormitory at the Government Secondary School, Chibok near Maiduguri .
In a video, Boko Haram leader, Abubarka Shekau, threatened to sell the girls into slavery. However the group later offered to swap the girls for Boko Haram fighters held by the government.
The Federal Government has come under severe criticism from local and international media for its lethargic handling of the abduction, prompting the ruling party, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to accuse the opposition of sponsoring a media campaign to discredit the government.
On Wednesday, the U.S. government told Nigerians to hold the government accountable for the failure to rescue the girls more than two months after they were kidnapped.
Details contained in the contract document obtained by The Hill, an American newspaper specialising in covering parliament, show that the firm will also be “assisting the government’s efforts to mobilize international support in fighting Boko Haram as part of the greater war on terror”.
The firm also promised to assist the government in effecting “real change” in the country.
“A more comprehensive approach using vehicles such as public diplomacy and engaging outside experts to enact real changes is how the advocacy industry is evolving,” Phil Elwood, a Vice President at Levick, told The Hill. “A communications strategy alone is not enough to solve the complex and multifaceted problems facing some of the more controversial nations.”
“For me, after talking to him, the priority for President Jonathan beyond any is finding and bringing home the girls,” said Lanny Davis, an Executive Vice President at Levick.
“There’s got to be a way to amplify what he’s saying and doing to find these girls because over here in America, we’re not hearing much about his effort,” Mr. Davis added.
Levick will also be working with Jared Genser, a human rights attorney, who has worked for notable personalities such as South African Nobel Peace Prize winner, Desmond Tutut and Burmese pro-democracy advocate Aung San Suu Kyi in the past to publicise “President Goodluck Jonathan Administration’s past, present and future priority to foster transparency, democracy and the rule of law throughout Nigeria.”
Mr. Genser told The Hill that he took the job following Mr Jonathan’s commitment to tackle Boko Haram.
“In terms of advancing human rights, however, the real work has to be done working with governments that are well meaning but lack the capacity — or as much capacity as they might like — and want to do the right thing,” he said.
“At the end of the day, the [Nigerian] president has said clearly to us that he wants results,” he said.
“I would not sit here and pretend that we are singlehandedly going to rescue the girls, that’s not our role,” Genser said. “What we can do is, we can provide advice and support about how to do so in accordance with international human rights norms and standards,” he added.
The contract shows that Levick will be paid N11,625,000.00 ($75,000.00) by month for its effort plus extra cost for advertisements, video production and website development. This will be done through an unnamed state-owned media agency.
The company will also receive additional fee of N3,487,500.00 ($22,500.00) if an associate of the company travels to Nigeria.
An associate of Mr. Genser company, Perseus Strategies, will get, N3,875,000.00 ($25,000.00) per month as retainer.
The hiring of Levick confirms the report by respected PR news website, www.holmesreport.com, that the government was in market for a PR firm to help bolster its dented image internationally over its far-from-impressive handling of the Chibok abduction.
At the time, the Nigerian government denied the publication while the Public Relations Consultants Association of Nigeria, (PRCAN) criticised the government describing its search for a foreign PR firm as a “needless strategic gaffe”.
“The purported search is premised on a wrong foundation of white washing Nigeria before foreign media and audiences. However, the real challenge before the Federal Government of Nigeria lies elsewhere and that is at the home front with its citizens, representing the primary stakeholders,” the PRCAN said in a statement at the time.

Ramadan: Jonathan Tasks Muslims on Tolerance, Fairness

 president Goodluck Jonathan
...Says the nation will overcome terrorism

by Jaiyeola Andrews

As Muslims begin  their holy month of Ramadan, President Goodluck Jonathan,  Saturday tasked  them to imbibe the virtues of piety, tolerance and fairness to all.

This was contained in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

He equally urged Nigerians not to succumb to despair, but to remain steadfast in the firm conviction that with courage, determination, focus, decisiveness and collective support for the Armed Forces  and security agencies, the country will ultimately overcome the evil agents of sectionalism, sectarianism and international terrorism who seek to disunite the nation.

Blast in northern Nigeria kills 10

An explosion in the red light district of northern Nigeria’s Bauchi city has killed 10 people and injured 14 others, police said Saturday.
The cause of the late Friday blast was not immediately clear, but Boko Haram have attacked Bauchi repeatedly during their five-year uprising aimed at creating a strict Islamic state in the north.
Bauchi state police spokesman Mohammed Haruna said the targeted building in the Bayan Gari neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city was widely known as a brothel.
“Ten people were confirmed dead, while 14 others sustained various degrees of injury,” Haruna said, adding that the explosion went off at roughly 10pm.
“The entire area has been cordoned off and (the) scene secured,” Haruna said.
Bomb attacks on targets which Boko Haram has branded sinful — including bars, churches and schools teaching a Western curriculum — have formed a major part of the insurgency.
Nigeria has estimated that more than 10,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in 2009.
The violence has escalated in recent months, with more than 2,000 deaths recorded since the start of the year.
The capital Abuja has been hit with three separate bomb attacks since mid-April, most recently on Wednesday when 24 people were killed in a blast at a popular shopping plaza in the heart of the city.
Police had initially given a death toll of 21 for the attack, but the health ministry revised those figures upwards on Saturday.
In Kano, the largest city in the mainly Muslim north, a bomb planted in the parking lot of a public health college killed eight people on Monday.
The extremists have received unprecedented international attention in recent weeks following their April 14 abduction of more than 200 teenage girls from the town of Chibok in the northeast.
The gruesome mass abduction has drawn condemnation from governments and prominent people worldwide and offers of military help from major world powers to boost Nigeria’s counter-insurgency effort.

Fayemi Concedes Defeat, Congratulates Fayose

Following Ayo Fayose’s victory at the Ekiti Elections, on Saturday, Governor Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress, on Sunday, conceded defeat to his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, describing his victory as an expression of the voice of the Ekiti people.
In his concession speech, Fayemi disclosed that he had reached out to Fayose, congratulating him on his victory.

 Here’s Fayemi’s full speech:
“Yesterday, Ekiti State decided. Following the gubernatorial elections held in the land of honour, Ekiti State, Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially returned the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the election.
If indeed this is the will of the Ekiti People, I stand in deference to your will. If the result of the elections is an expression of the voice of our people, we must all heed your voice.
I have just spoken with my brother, Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, congratulating him on his victory. In a few hours from now, I would be meeting the Governor-elect to discuss the future of our dear state and how we would work together to institute a smooth transition programme.
It has been a hard fought election. As expected, in the course of the campaigns, there were unsavory episodes as the candidates toured the nooks and crannies of the state to sell ourselves to the people. Elections tend to be highly divisive affairs that often see brother rising against brother. Despite our diverse party affiliations, and regardless of which way we voted on Saturday, we must remember that we are all sons and daughters of Ekiti State. Ekiti is ours to build together.
On our part, over the course of the campaigns, we presented our scorecards before the people of Ekiti State. We never at any point took your support for granted. We campaigned, we canvassed and we traversed the nooks and crannies of this State. Our performance and achievements in office will remain the backdrop against which the next government and indeed future governments will be assessed. We are proud that with the support of Ekiti people, we have raised the bar of excellence in governance. In all, we gave our best, for conscience and for posterity.
Indeed a new sociology of the Ekiti people may have evolved. However, the task of understanding how the outcome of this election has defined us as a people will be that of scholars. For us as an administration and a cadre of political leaders in Ekiti State, we have fought a good fight, we have kept faith.
To members of our party, our campaign team and indeed all Ekiti people who defied the siege on our state to cast their votes for our party, I salute your exemplary courage and doggedness in the face of harassment. Thank you for staying the course. The incidences of brazen harassment, intimidation and allied infractions on fundamental humanrights, which many of you suffered in the hands of agents of the state, would be documented and communicated to the appropriate authorities, for the records.”

Nigeria put Bosnia out of the Competition

PETER Odemwingie scored the only goal to give Nigeria a victory that means World Cup debutants Bosnia-Hercegovina will not progress from Group F.
The Stoke player struck in the first half to give Nigeria their first win at a World Cup finals since 1998.
The goal came just seven minutes after Bosnia striker Edin Dzeko had a goal incorrectly disallowed for offside.Nigeria will reach the knockout stages if they get a point against Argentina, or if Iran fail to beat Bosnia.
Odemwingie's decisive strike came just a month after he returned to the Nigeria squad following a two-year absence caused by a dispute with coach Stephen Keshi.
Knowing they needed a win to stay in their first World Cup finals, Bosnia attacked from the start but were vulnerable in defence, with Odemwingie, John Mikel Obi and Michael Babatunde all squandering early chances for Nigeria.
Bosnia briefly thought they had taken the lead when Dzeko latched onto a pass from Miralem Pjanic, but the Manchester City forward was denied by an offside flag, though replays suggested he had timed his run well.
The Super Eagles made the most of the let-off as Emmanuel Emenike powered past Emir Spahic on the right before finding Odemwingie, who shot through the legs of his Stoke team-mate Asmir Begovic to score.Pjanic stood out with a string of perceptive passes, but Dzeko in particular could not capitalise on the Roma midfielder's fine work, spurning more opportunities before half-time.
Nigeria absorbed Bosnian pressure early in the second half, but they counter attacked effectively and came close to going further ahead when Babatunde and Emenike forced saves from Begovic in quick succession.
Bosnia continued to press, but substitute Vedad Ibisevic, who came off the bench to score in the defeat by Argentina, wasted a chance to equalise when he bundled a cross wide despite finding space in the area.
And, with seconds of injury time remaining, Dzeko scuffed a shot which Nigeria goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama deflected onto the post and away to safety.
Nigeria striker Peter Odemwingie: "It's been 16 years with no victory for our fans. We had to work hard for this - they are a quality team.
"We are happy to bounce back after what people thought was a poor performance in the first game. It was very important to win.
"From now on we're looking upwards. Hopefully these three points will get us through to the second round."
Bosnia-Hercegovina coach Safet Susic: "I don't have any recriminations. They are all depressed, disappointed, silent.
"They surprised us with their speed and movement. They wanted to win probably that much more than us.
"I was told there was no offside. But this is not the first or last refereeing mistake, not just at the World Cup or elsewhere."

Scientists discover new treatment for ovarian cancer

Scientists at the University of Arizona Cancer Center at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, United States of America, on Friday, discovered a new treatment for ovarian cancer.
According to sciencelive.com, a science website, the discovery can improve response rates (increase the rate of tumour shrinkage) and prolong the time until the cancer recurs.
'This is a new, exciting, target medication in treating recurrent ovarian cancer.  Recurrent ovarian cancer is almost always fatal and new treatments are desperately needed.
'The breakthrough showed a trend in improving survival, although these data are not yet matured' the report added.

Ovarian cancer occurs when a tumour forms in one or both of a woman's ovaries. Ovarian cancer is often termed a silent killer because its symptoms are not obvious until it gets to an advanced stage.

I Don't Know You And You Don't Know MeT.B. Joshua Addresses Fayose Rumour

Prophet T.B. Joshua has lashed out at reports linking him with PDP's Ayo Fayose, stating that he has never met Ekiti State's former Governor and warning him to avoid 'playing God'.
Addressing the rumour published by several online news portals that Fayose received 'blessings' from the prominent cleric in lieu of tomorrow's (21st June) controversial gubernatorial elections in Ekiti, Joshua took to his official Facebook page to debunk it.

"Please, don't bring my name into politics,'Joshua pertinently stated. 'I don't know you and you don't know me. Why should you say you have received my blessings to win the election? Please, don't play God."
The rumour initially started when Vanguard Newspaper published an article on April 4thtitled 'Fayose unfolds spiritual strategy' in which it was reported the former governor was 'eliciting the spiritual counsel' of Joshua.
Joshua came out strongly to denounce the article immediately, also using social media site Facebook, where the pastor boasts of over 1,000,000 followers.
'What is this stuff and who could have been spreading the false stories on my involvement in politics? This is not for the glory of God,' Joshua wrote in a post in April.
'If we want to come to church, we come for the salvation of our soul. We can play politics with everything but not with God, the Giver of our faith. I have never met former Governor Fayose before. What is all this?'
With the elections in Ekiti to be held Saturday 21st June 2014 eliciting controversial headlines, Joshua's name has been connected to Fayose once again, perhaps in an attempt to draw on Joshua's widespread popularity to gain more public support.
It is a fact the pastor clearly resents as evidenced by his second strongly worded rebuttal.

Blackberry’s Latest Smartphone, Blackberry Passport, To Be Released In September

Blackberry’s latest smartphone, the Passport, has been given a September release date.
The Passport, like the Q10, has a square 1:1 ratio screen, measuring 4.5 inches diagonally, with a resolution of 1440 x 1440.
That’s a very respectable 452 ppi – more pixel-packed, for example, than the HTC One (M8)’s 441 ppi
display.
Despite its smaller screen, the Passport is actually wider than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, measuring in at 2.8 inches across, compared to the Note 3′s 2 inch width.

Coach Stephen Says They Must Change Game To Beat Bosnia

The Nigerian team was tactically bereft, lacking in technical depth and lackadaisical in play; resultant of impeded communication within the team stemming from lack of concentration on the field.
The team hardly recorded any clean, direct shot; most every shot that went straight at goal landed calmly in the hands of the Iranian goalkeeper. They should take kicking lessons, ball control coaching and accurate ball passes.
At the end of 90 minutes, the eagles with an 'uninspiring' performance, topped possession with 63% to 37% and handing Iran a record first time World Cup opener that didn't end in a defeat.
Stephen Keshi, clearly unimpressed did not lash his boys, he however, is not happy.
Speaking to Optima Live, the coach said ''the boys were too nervous and unsettled:''You don't do that at this stage.''
He believes like we hope that the team can come out of this tough situation they put themselves and maybe qualify for the second round, goalkeeper Enyeama thinks so too.
''It happens in football. We didn't perform as expected but we have to move on.
''I wanted a win but must take a draw. We must do better to get a win against Bosnia,'' Keshi added.
Nigeria play hard fighting Bosnians on Saturday, and that match is a decider to Nigeria's stay or exit in the tournament.
Bosnia, known for their fighting spirit and unpredictability are in a worse situation than the eagles, having lost the first game to Argentina, Edin Dzeko and his teammates will come up with everything under their coffer to ensure that they either beat or draw Nigeria.

UK deports Nigerian woman seeking asylum in the UK over fears her daughters would be circumcised

UK deports Nigerian woman seeking asylum in the UK over fears her daughters would be circumcised here
32 year old Afusat Saliu has been deported from the UK after a campaign to keep her in the country failed. There was a campaign against her deportation on the grounds that her two daughters, 4 and 2 face the possibility of female genital mutilation in Nigeria.
Afusat had fled Nigeria in 2011, claiming her stepmother had threatened to circumcise her first daughter. She was pregnant again at the time and claimed she feared her second daughter would also be subjected to FGM.
Afusat and her two daughters were arrested on May 28th by the UK Border Agency and although over 120,000 people signed a petition calling on the Home Office not to deport her, the campaign failed as the woman and her kids were put on a flight back to Nigeria yesterday June 4th.
"We consider every claim for asylum on its individual merits and in this case, the claimant was not considered to be in need of protection. The case has gone through the proper legal process and our decision has been supported by the UK courts on five separate occasions, while the European Court of Human Rights declined an application to halt the removal." UK Home Office said.
Afusat's lawyer said she's spoken to her since she returned to Nigeria and said Afusat is quite upset at being sent back and plans to continue fighting her case until she's allowed back in the UK.
